It was touch and go whether we would see a roundup of the top mobile phone news stories this week, but thankfully, the LHC hasn’t caused us all to disappear into a man-made black hole. Not yet, anyway! Impending doom aside, the industry has been buzzing this week:
1. Symbian Still Number One Smartphone Software.

Published as part of a Gartner study into smartphone sales in 2008, Symbian still reigns supreme despite tough competition from Windows Mobile and Research in Motion. According to Gartner, Symbian has a 57% market share with RIM’s BlackBerry operating system coming in second with a 17% market share, and Windows Mobile holds third at 12%.
2. Someone Answer that Ringing Dog!

We don’t want to think about where you would have to speak for the caller to hear you! Poor, confused Nero, a Doberman/Great Dane cross in South Africa, gobbled up its owners Nokia mobile phone at feeding time, necessitating a trip to the vet to have it removed. Luckily Nero has made a full recovery, and told the press he is considering trying an MP3 player next. Unfortunately, reports indicate the Nokia passed away during the ordeal.
3. New Touchscreen Keyboard Innovation.

Swype is coming soon, and could be just what you need if you love touchscreen phones, but hate fiddly touchscreen keyboards. By simply keeping your finger on the pad and moving it to your required letter, Swype builds your word from its dictionary of 65,000, all without removing your finger from the screen. No details on which phones this will be available for yet, but take a look at the video on their site to see how good this looks!
4. HTC Touch HD Pictures Leaked!

There have been several Touch devices released by HTC and this is the latest to be spotted. The Touch HD is so called due to an amazing 480×800 screen resolution, which is almost guaranteed to look astounding, and sets the Touch HD up to be a perfect mobile video device. GPS, 3G and a 5 megapixel camera are all rumoured, as is an pre-Christmas release date!
5. Symbian to get iTunes App?

A rumour has hit the Internet that an official application to allow iTunes to be used on Symbian S60 handsets is being developed. This would end having to use other means of transferring music from iTunes to your phone and hopefully enable the use of iTunes store too. It may also upset Nokia’s Comes With Music plans, but what’s new?
6. Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 on its Way!

We talked about it last week, but now it’s official! The new Windows Mobile based Sony Ericsson smartphone will be released in the UK on the 30th of September and by all accounts, it’s very good indeed.
7. Nokia Tube Coming Soon Too?

The Tube has been about forever, but with no official details coming forward from Nokia, is this a phone destined for a few minutes fame on screen and then disappear completely? Not according to the Boy Genius, who has heard a rumour it’s set for an early October release. That’s right, not an official announcement, but release! There’s not long to go until we find out if this is accurate or not.
8. Glasgow Underground to get Mobile Coverage.

O2 have announced they will be offering mobile phone coverage on the Glasgow underground network from December this year. If it proves profitable, expect London to follow soon after.
9. More Weight to the GPhone’s Rumoured Imminent Launch.

We know it’s coming, but exactly when it will be has been the subject of much conversation, however with more and more sources citing the 23rd September as at the very least the day Google spill the beans, the wait could almost be over.
10. Mobile Phones Cause Divorce!

According to Shelley Chesworth, who works for the solicitors SAS Daniels, mobile phones are involved in 75% of their current divorce cases. She says infidelity is discovered mainly via forgotten SMS messages, photos and videos of presumably compromising situations. The purchase of a second phone is also a bit of a giveaway! Who’s going to be the first to launch a special edition ‘divorce’ handset, we wonder?
